The Wadsworth Center Parasitology Laboratory is the New York State public health reference laboratory for parasitic infections. Laboratory responsibilities include:

  • Clinical diagnosis utilizing various diagnostic methods
  • Development of molecular assays for pathogenic parasite detection

Scientists in the Parasitology Laboratory also pursue research questions while collaborating with colleagues both inside the NYSDOH and with outside universities and private laboratories.

Additionally, the laboratory provides educational opportunities to a wide range of people with varying scientific backgrounds.

Publication on Healthcare-Associated Malaria Transmission Highlighted as Editor’s Choice

A manuscript coauthored by scientists from the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center and Bureau of Communicable Disease Control, in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and epidemiologists from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Westchester County Department of Health, has now been published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases and selected as the journal’s Editor’s Choice article.

Wadsworth Center Chief Improving Diagnosis of Tickborne Infections

Dr. Susan Madison-Antenucci, Chief of Bloodborne & Parasitic Diseases at the Wadsworth Center, spoke at the New York Medical College symposium titled “Vector borne Infections in the Hudson Valley – There’s More Than Just Lyme Out There.”The goal of the event was to raise awareness of the broader spectrum of tickborne diseases, supporting faster diagnosis and appropriate treatment for patients throughout the state.
