Laboratory Services

Bacterial Serology

  • Anaplasma phagocytophilum IgG IFA*
  • Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana IgG IFA*
  • Borrelia burgdorferi*:
    • Lyme C6 ELISA Screen with reflex
    • Western Blot IgG and IgM when Screen is equivocal or positive
  • Brucella abortus IgG-IgA-IgM Tube Agglutination
  • Coxiella burnetii (Q Fever) Phase 1 and Phase 2 IgG IFA
  • Ehrlichia chaffeensis IgG IFA*
  • Rickettsia IgG and IgM IFA (Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Typhus Fever groups)
  • Treponema pallidum (syphilis) Panels
    • Screen: T. pallidum IgG ELISA.
      • Reflex: RPR and TPPA when IgG ELISA is reactive or equivocal
    • Perinatal: T. pallidum IgG ELISA, RPR, and TPPA 
    • Confirmation: Define reactive syphilis results on requisition.
      • Same test algorithm as Perinatal panel above.
    • VDRL Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

* Submit EDTA tubes, CSF, synovial fluid and skin punches directly to the appropriate laboratory for PCR testing.

Parasitic Serology

  • Babesia microti IgG-IgM-IgA IFA*

*Submit EDTA tubes directly to the appropriate laboratory for PCR testing.

Viral Serology

  • Arbovirus Screen, CSF - West Nile IgM ELISA When encephalitis PCR testing is also desired:
    • Freeze at least 1.0 mL of CSF
    • Complete additional Virus Encephalitis Laboratory (VEL) paperwork
    • Ship on dry ice directly to VEL.
    • Serum for Arbovirus Screen by DIL may be shipped together with the CSF
    • Serum will be forwarded by VEL to DIL
  • Arbovirus Screen, Serum Includes:
    • West Nile IgM ELISA
    • West Nile Envelope Protein IgG- IgM-IgA Microsphere Immunofluorescence Assay (MIA)
    • Powassan Envelope Protein IgG- IgM-IgA MIA
    • Eastern Equine Encephalitis IgG IFA
    • Western Equine Encephalitis IgG IFA
    • St. Louis Encephalitis IgG IFA
    • California Serogroup Encephalitis IgG IFA
    • Chikungunya IgG and IgM IFA 
    • Zika IgM ELISA                                            

Contact your local county health department for approval prior to submitting the following:

  • Measles - IgG and IgM IFA, active disease
  • Mumps - IgG and IgM IFA, active disease
  • Rubella - IgG ELFA and IgM ELISA, active disease

Immune Status Serology

  • Immunity testing for measles (IgG ELFA), mumps (IgG ELFA), rubella (IgG ELFA) and varicella zoster (IgG ELFA) is available for local and state health department employees only.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Referrals

  • Contact the Diagnostic Immunology Laboratory (DIL) at 518-486-3845 for test availability and the appropriate CDC Requisition. Specimens and test requisitions (NYS Infectious Disease Requisition and CDC Requisition) must be submitted to DIL for referral to the CDC.
